And the fishing begins

June was a busy month for Howie with Red Flag and work so it was nice that the squadron took a fishing trip over a 4 day weekend to hang out and relax. Howie really wanted me to fly down with our friend Riddler in his plane so I could see Alaska they way he does, so much so that he drove the 10 hour trip to Seward with Kaysen by himself. Flying in a small plane over mountains is the way to travel around here. The views were gorgeous and it was much quicker than a drive.
Seward was beautiful and because I wanted to go fishing Howie stayed behind to watch Kaysen since he was going 2 weeks later and he had already gone on few salmon runs already. The ride was long, cold and bumpy but I was one of the few that didn't get sick so I can't complain. We did see a killer whale, sea otters and sea lions so it was neat to see them in the wild. I was also proud because I was one of two girls on the boat and I caught the first fish! (So what if it was a trash fish and you can't eat them)All I have to say is that I have never worked so hard for 2 stinking fish in all my life, the rod itself is heavy with the weight on the end, then reel it up 100ft with a fish and you are worn slick after 12hrs on the water.
We also got some time to go see Exit Glacier there in Seward. Of course it was raining so we didn't get to go all the way up, but it was nice to see a glacier and check that off the list. Speaking of list we have gotten quite a lot checked off in the 9 months we have been here.

Alaska check list:

  • -50 degree winter
  • frost bite-Howie
  • Northern lights
  • ice sculptures
  • see a glacier
  • Hot springs
  • fishing-ice/salmon/halibut
  • Alaskan summer
  • See southern Alaska
  • buy some sort of ATV
  • Denali
  • See moose,eagle, bears etc
  • kill moose and bear-only thing Howie needs to still check off
All in all I would say we have checked most boxes for living here in Alaska
