The Ferry was a great way to travel, no driving, Kaysen could nap and the scenery was breathtaking. I would highly recommend taking it if you have to make the drive. We had a little cabin with a bathroom and 4 bunk beds. It was small but it made you get out and enjoy the outdoors. Kaysen liked the ship because there were stairs everywhere so he was in heaven. The dogs had to stay in the truck while on the boat but they had plenty of room in the bed of the truck. The only bad thing was the first day we were out at sea for 36 hrs and you could walk them on the car deck but my dogs are house trained so they didn't go the restroom for 26 hrs. I felt so bad for them. Other than that things were smooth sailing (no pun intended) until we got off the boat at our final destination in Haines AK. We drove up to the Canadian border that was 45 miles away from where we got off the boat and there was a 2 hour line, no joke 2 hours. Once we finally got up to the front they asked us if we had any guns, and we did, BUT the kicker was Howie's hand gun. To bring a hand gun into Canada you have to have special papers, and Howie had 1 of the 3. So we were sent back to the town to ship the gun to us in Alaska. Needless to say I was not happy at this point since we could have just done this in the first place. So after the shipping of the gun we drove back to the border and got through with no problems. We Stayed the night in Haines Junction Canada for the night in a quaint little hotel for the evening. The next morning we got up and drove though the rest of the Yukon Territory Canada and made it to Eielson AFB our new home 7 hours later. Do the math... We left on our trips starting Aug 12 and arrived to Eielson on Sept 7th. Thats a lot of suitcase, close quarter living with two dogs and a baby. I will be so glad to get into our house!
